WildPigs have created an explainer film for World Tennis Number; the global tennis rating system from the ITF.

World Tennis Number assigns players all over the world with a skill rating, this works across singles and doubles and is based on players’ results. The more matches players play, the more confidence the tech has in their rating. The beauty of the system is its ability to match players of similar ratings which consequently results in better quality games.

The piece is founded on a question and answer structure, supported by filmed content influenced with dynamic VFX to assist with storytelling. The functions of the ITF’s World Tennis Number tech are extensive making it vital to deliver clear messaging around what it does, how it works and how players access it.

Starting by identifying the most pertinant questions players might have, WildPigs developed a script showcasing World Tennis Number in a simple and engaging way. The aim of the film was to encourage players to find out more and sign up – not necessarily to explain the science in extreme detail which could risk overwhelming players and turn them off. Once the script was locked WildPigs and ITF identitifed a small cast of players to feature in the film and a location where everything would take place. One central player was selected to deliver the script and act as Narrator. The script was delivered in digestible pieces supported by VFX interacting with the filmed content to make the information easy to understand and interesting to watch.

It was important to introduce players to the tech as a visual entity, therefore VFX plays a vital storytelling role in the film. With its graphics founded on intuitive principles World Tennis Number communicates a lot of information in a simple way. It was critical that the film shows this, seeing the tech in action on a player’s phone, how it moves and the functions it is capable of, was a priority. WildPigs took the approach that the VFX should be a major visual feature, doing this helped bring lots of visual excitement into the piece which further increased engagement.

The film ends with WildPigs’ Positioning for ITF World Tennis Number ‘Game. Set. Matched’ which underlines the core function of the tech in familiar and memorable tennis terminology.
